Helping Russian families living in and around the Eastern Siberian city of Chita to grow their own fruit and vegetables
Drawing on the great and ongoing Russian tradition of dachas, Sponsoring Allotments in Siberia was established in 2000 with the objective of enabling Russian families living in and around the Eastern Siberian city of Chita to grow their own fruit and vegetables. The Siberian summer is short and often surprisingly hot (25ºC and above for weeks at a time) and the soil is not that fertile, but this does not stop every family that has access to a plot of land seeking to grow enough fruit and vegetables on which to survive during the winter, when the temperature plummets to as low as -45ºC.
Where is Chita?
Chita is a city located in Eastern Siberia, close to the border with Mongolia and China, some 6,000km and 6 time zones east of Moscow.
